Leah Arcand

Educator | Founder of Save Rez Dogs

We are honored to present Leah Arcand as a Virtual Speaker at the Dog People Evolution Conference 2025.

Leah's unique perspective as an Indigenous leader and advocate for both human and animal rights makes her an essential voice at the conference. She will share invaluable insights on the intersection of cultural identity, animal welfare, and community activism—offering inspiration for anyone committed to creating meaningful, inclusive change for both dogs and the communities that care for them.

More About Leah

Leah Arcand from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation located in Treaty Six Territory, Saskatchewan, Canada. She is a Mother, High School Teacher, and Founder of the grassroots movement "Save Rez Dogs”.

Since August 2019, Save Rez Dogs has been one of the top Indigenous female-led, volunteer-run organizations focused on advocacy and improving animal welfare in First Nations communities.

In their work, they use anti-oppressive education and animal rights resources, with a mix of rez humour to spread their message and build community engagement. They started as a hub for local community members, then it grew provincially, and now has spread out on a national level. They raise money through their merch line to fund consented frontline work to help rescue missions such as spay and neuters, dog houses, and other emergency needs.

In 2024, Leah has pushed to get a resolution passed on implementing a National Strategy on Animal Care and Control for First Nations through the Assembly of First Nations (AFN). We are hopeful to see more good things for Save Rez Dogs in 2025.
